  • How to Play the Socilian Defence (Levy & O'Connell, 1978)

I wonder if the second link in an up-to-date version of the 1978 edition, or just a reprint.

Also, there is no mention (or did not see it) if it is in algebraic notation.

Yould some of our Chesstalkers know something about it ?

    Salut Jean-Pierre,

The second link is for a used copy of the book.

Link # 1 is to the 2009 edition; a reprint from Ishi Press. This is the company belonging to the infamous Sam Sloan.

He has begun reprinting a number of older books. All are exact reprints with no changes in notation. If the original was in descriptive as is the case for Levy's book, then the reprint is too.

His only contribution is to write the occasional foreword and sometimes put his name on the cover.

These are all POD (print on demand) books, so there is no inventory to carry. His only investment is the the time to copy the originals. I am not sure what the copyright issues are.

I see he recently put out My 60 Memorable Games (a copy in descriptive) including the Simon & Schuster cover. Batsford stole his glory by releasing a cheaper algebraic version.

I bought my copy Batsford 1978) of Levy's book used for $5 at Welchs. You can probably find it around if you keep your eyes open.

        Hi Neil.

To reprint a book of someone else, I think one has to wait a long time after the death of the author(s), something like 50 years in Canada...

Also, I forgot in my first answer to tell you I already have the 1978 edition.

I was hoping there were a new edition, an up-to-date version with algebraic notation.

        Bonne semaine :)
