  • Mystery game #15: Some will smile, some shed a tear!

Here is the text of an interesting game. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to discuss who the players may be, their ratings / strengths, era of game, time controls, and setting. I believe that although it is a one-sided encounter, there will be quite a bit of interest in this particular game, for various reasons, once I reveal all!

    1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d5 3.Bf4 c5 4.e3 Qb6 5.Qc1 Nc6 6.c3 Bf5 7.Nbd2 cxd4 8.exd4 Rc8 9.h3 Nb4 10.Nh4 Bd3 11.Kd1 Bxf1 12.Nxf1 Nd3 13.Qd2 Nxf4 14.Qxf4 Qxb2 15.Rc1 Ne4 16.Rc2 Nxc3+ 17.Kd2 Nb1+ 18.Ke1 Qxc2 19.Nf3 e6 20.Ng5 Bb4+, 0-1.

Harold Uuetoa (~1750) -- IM Bryon Nickoloff (2450), Canadian Open, Kapuskasing 2004 (6). Played July 14, 2004, 40/120, SD/60. I was handling the database for this event, and had trouble when transcribing the scoresheets for this game, due to errors, cross-outs, etc, so put them aside. I have just now rediscovered that folder! This was Bryon's last event, as he passed away Aug 3, 2004, in North Bay.

My title for the thread: a) refers to the smile one would have when playing through this game, as a reminder of Nick's wondrous chess talent! Bryon kept his IM strength right to the end. The tear is one would have in understanding how many more Nick masterpieces wouldn't happen, due to his early death, at age 48.

    Rest In Peace, Nick.
