  • Mystery game #25: Candidate Master, age 15, draws with experienced GM!

Here is the text of an interesting game. You can discuss the game, guess as to the players and their ratings, era of game, format, time controls, and so on. I have provided some clues in the thread title, and will complete the data in a few days. Enjoy!

    David Wang (2143) -- GM Mark Tseitlin (2524), Canadian Open, Kapuskasing 2004 (10), played 2004-07-18, time controls 40/120, SD/60.
I had trouble with the score sheets for this game, while doing the database at the time. Mark's is in Russian script with small letters; there are a few times in the game where it is tough to know exactly what happened, with some errors, cross-outs, etc. But I solved it, and we have this game now!!
Black was pushing for advantage for most of the game, but White was equal to the challenge of defense. Very impressive game by our 15-year-old junior!! Black's plan against the Sozin (6.Bc4) of exchanging knights on d4 and then playing ...Bc6, to prepare ...d6-d5, gained in popularity, following Fischer -- Spassky, 4th match game, World Championship, Reykjavik 1972, where Black held the draw easily and was even better against Fischer's pet system, which he had scored well with for 15 years.
David was playing in three national championships in 2004, in the space of eight weeks! These were the CYCC B16 and Canadian Open (both in Kapuskasing), and Canadian Zonal in Toronto. He got his rating to 2260, but hasn't played CFC chess for a number of years now. GM Tseitlin, born 1943, became a GM only in 1997, after moving to Israel. He played in the Soviet Championship several times before that, but didn't get many foreign opportunities to obtain the norms. He was GM strength many years before receiving the title. He was born and raised in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, and won the championship of that city four times. He did win the international tournament Polanica Zdroj in 1978, but this is not listed on his chessmetrics.com file. Mark was one of 14 GMs invited to the Kapuskasing 2004 Canadian Open, which may have been a record for a Canadian Open, which was broken at Ottawa 2007!! He was training GM Dimitry Tyomkin, who tied for first with GM Alexander Moiseenko at Kapuskasing, each with 8/10. Mark has defeated his friend and multiple times Candidate, the late Viktor Korchnoi, four times in tournament games. Korchnoi is sometimes ranked as the 6th strongest player in history.
