  • Mystery game #38: Unusual oppo-castling Spanish fight goes down to the wire!

Here is the text of an interesting game. You can discuss the game, offer variations, guess as to players' identities, strengths, setting of game, era, time controls, and so forth. I will supply all that data in a few days. Enjoy!!

Zehn Nasir (2093) -- Manuela Renteria (1595), Ontario High School Championship, Toronto 2014 (5). Played 2014-05-25. Time controls 30/90, SD/60. TD: Christopher Field, Head Arbiter NTD Frank Dixon. Hosted by University of Toronto Schools.

A fascinating game in the Spanish with rare opposite sides castling; it is a variant of the Archangelsk System, often played successfully at the highest levels, by the late IM Bryon Nickoloff (1956-2004). In spite of the 500-point rating difference, favouring White, Black gives a remarkable effort. I was monitoring the game closely. At move 40, with no increment on the time control, White had 6:31 remaining, while Black had 3:45. Then, at move 53, White had 3:43 left, while Black had 1:41. Black sacrifices his rook at move 52, to get rid of White's passed pawn, and tries to force White to mate with bishop and knight against king. A nice last ditch try. At move 59, White had 2:08 left, Black had 0:48. Black lost on time at the end.

White has been very active since this event, and has been rated over 2300. Black, who gained 78 rating points in this tournament, has only played very sparingly since.
