Thirty years ago, more or less, while serving as CFC Executive Director and editor of En Passant, I exchanged some letters with Lawrence. After he had tied for first with Bryon Nickoloff at the Toronto Open in 1991 I asked him how his game with Ian Findlay had ended and he sent me back the game score, and also the score of his game with David Filipovich in the last round, both with light annotations. These should have made it into the magazine but they didn’t. Here they are now. His win with black versus Findlay shows that Lawrence could play classical openings quite as well as his beloved Rat. His win versus Filipovich is a fine positional effort somewhat marred by mutual time trouble at the finish. Enjoy!
