Dr. Peter Sibbald (2030) -- NM Miladin Djerkovic (2365), Kingston Open 1997 (1), played 1997-02-08, time controls 30/90', SD/60', TD/Organizer: Larry Bevand, Assistant Frank Dixon.
In the Grand Prix Sicilian, White embarks on a creative double pawn sacrifice, starting with 11.c3. He obtains an active position, with two bishops, but somehow his attacking chances never quite get rolling, due to Black's exceptionally accurate play, combining precise defense with aggression. Particularly instructive are Black's knight moves, starting with 24...Nf6; this sequence, with the knight the best minor on the board, is enhanced by 27...Qb6!!, wins material and gradually destroys White's position. Miladin is a professional engineer, who immigrated from the former Yugoslavia, settling in Ottawa. He was especially active and successful during this period, topping 2400; he tied for first in this event with IM Deen Hergott, each drawing head-to-head and sweeping the rest for 4.5/5.
