  • Mystery game #61: Black steadily outplays dithering White, for deserved win

Here is the text of an interesting game. You can discuss the game: variations, player strengths, era, setting, time controls. I will reveal all in a few days. Enjoy!!

Mark Watson (1732) -- Sam Sharpe (2090), Kingston Open 1997 (3), played 1997-02-08, time controls 30/90', SD/60', TD/Org Larry Bevand, Assistant Frank Dixon, Colle System.
White plays the opening quite well, to obtain a decent early middlegame position by move 14, which is perhaps only minutely better for Black. But from that juncture, White, lower-rated by more than 350 points, struggles to put together a good middlegame plan, with a lot of aimless piece shifting, allowing Black to gradually take over more space, and to seize the initiative. Black steadily optimizes his piece placement, to prepare the powerful tactic 27...Nxd4!, exploiting the c-file pin. From there, he builds a winning advantage, and finishes with 41...Qh5+, winning a rook. White could have, and perhaps should have, played in section II of this event, as the rating cutoff was U1950, and he was more than 200 points below that. Some organizers permit this, others require a stricter adherence to rating classes.
