Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
First of all I would like to thank the GTA community for your support over the last 28 years! We have prospered because of you! And we are proud of what we have accomplished!
Our lease on Mount Pleasant Road expires at the end of May 2021.
We will have been there for 13 years.
We started in Toronto on Bayview Ave. in 1993 and we had a great run. Unfortunately the building we were in was sold and it was impossible for us to work with the new landlord. The Mount Pleasant location has not been as good to us, although the landlord has been reasonable, so it was time to make a move.
Francis and I are now considering two possible locations but we are not married to either one so if you have suggestions, we are certainly open.
One is in Greektown on the Danforth. The other is on Dundas. Both locations represent a rent reduction of close to 50% but if sales go down by as much we are not winning this game....
what do they say...location...location...location.

Most of my orders were online, with only one or two in-person visits. If you can get within walking distance from a subway stop, that should be beneficial for walk-ins.
From what we observed, there seems to be more walk-by at the Dundas location (well at least during Covid) but that place will require some major fixing uppping.
Of course the rent is 15% more than the Danforth location...but still substantially less than Mount Pleasant.

Thank you Larry and Francis for all the work you put in to Toronto, generations of players were raised on Strategy games and CMA tourneys.
I imagine commercial rent would be great downtown at the moment, but maybe harder to keep down the road...
If they ever get around to the Ontario subway line, Queen/Spadina will be promising along with King/Bathurst.
If I hear of anything specific, will give a call.
I'm only an occasional shopper and mostly looking for used books. Still remember the Bayview location and the kid classes upstairs. Mt Pleasant is also good - nearby a bus stop or a short walk from the Eglinton subway -- during trips to Hart House tournaments I made a detour to Strategy - thus the location was (is) very convenient. The parking nearby on weekends was good - easy to find and free :) Every time I came it seemed that nearby jungle of huge condos were taking over the location - Yonge/Eglinton.
As for new potential locations - no ideas. Have not been there recently. Have they changed dramatically? As I recall it was not very dense areas. Will you have enough customers and traffic? Are you looking only for a store? Will you have space for chess classes or even a club? :)
Definitely not an easy decision but that a business part with all +/-. You have more info in your hands and your choice will be great :)
Hi Larry: I live near Danforth and Greenwood, a bit east of GreekTown. It is my experience that there is a fair amount of pedestrian traffic in GreekTown, more on the north side than the south side.
Francis would know better than I but here is my perspective:
Dundas, a little west of Bathurst...
For our retail customers, unfortunately we do not ask them for their postal code :(.
With the Netflix Queen's Gambit...we were drawing from everywhere in December...on-line and in person!

Dundas and Bathurst isn't close to a subway. Driving is poor over streetcar tracks. Close to food at Kensington Market and Chinatown.
The Danforth is a wealthier area, close to east-west subway and Don Valley, probably more foot traffic. You can participate in the annual Taste of the Danforth. Holy Name Catholic School has four outdoor chess tables. A little east is a French store, Bistro Normandie, and Face to Face, a successful games store ( Magic card tournaments)

The Ontario subway line will also go to Danforth and Pape (in the far future).
King Spadina to Bathurst services condo land. Lots of young people go out for coffee or beer. But do they shop mostly online?
There are the Snake and Lattes games bars (with chess) just west of Bathurst and College and Bathurst and Bloor.
With the shut down in Ontario we had to move our plans around a bit.
We now have signed a lease at 925 Danforth Avenue near the Donlands Subway Station in Toronto. We anticipate opening no later than August 1st, 2021 so we will continue operating out of 701 Mount Pleasant Road until that time.

Good luck with the move. You're very close to Donlands subway and not far from O'Connor exit of DVP. Just west of you is the famous Square Boy burgers, and on the north side is the Only bar/coffee where Dobrich had speed chess. To the east is the mosque. To the south a small park which hosts fireworks.
