Grandelius is making a comeback and doing well with the strength of that field. Some very ripe swindles and self-destructions in some of the games.

Surprising, to put it mildly, that Carlsen - with plenty of time on the clock - thought for only 14 seconds and played 29...Rcc6? here (allowing the white rook to get behind the pawn after 30.Rd8+ and 31.Ra8) rather than 29...Raa8!

Karjakin, Radjabov (who play each other!) and Dubov are out of the qualification spots but within touching distance going into the final round!

Karjakhin - Shak was quite the tactical melee. It was unusual for Karjakhin to come unglued like that.

                      1.e4 e5 2.Ke2 Ke7 3.Ke1 Ke8 4.Ke2 Ke7 5.Ke1 Ke8 6.Ke2 Ke7 1/2-1/2.

Rather than this, or allowing the same game to be played twice, which also happened, might it be less of a mockery to simply allow players to agree to a draw without playing? I found it sad that both players were laughing as they "played" this out, thus proving that it WAS a mockery. No points should be awarded for non-games.

I agree with you, its a shame. I also noticed that two other sets of opponents played identical positions - so thats collusion. With all the strides forward in marketing the game and sportsmanship and rule changes (30 move rule etc). This is a large step backward and casts a slight on professional chess. After all you are playing to an audience and broadcasting those games.

That the cons for the round robin or other tournament format when the game has a low value for players. I think the audience got their dose of fun and could go back to usual stuff.

Quarter finals game one MVL defends incredibly against Giri and then counter attacks with a king walk. Giri's king survives but the position is lost for him.
I love Aronian's sacrificial concept against Magnus but alas it wasnt enough.

Game 2 Its not easy to find tactics against the Berlin and the finish is superb. Nepo as white against Naka finishes with Rxf8+! supposing that Kxf8, Bxe7+ Kxe7, Rg7+ Kf8, e7+ Ke8, Nf6checkmate - wonderful!!
Giri against MVL - what a center!
