FM Gordon Taylor (2442) -- IM Deen Hergott (2539), Kingston Open 1996 (5). English, A32. Played 1996-02-11. Time controls 30/90', SD/60'. Organizer /TD: Larry Bevand, assistant Frank Dixon.

This is a very fine game indeed. It was the last round, with first place on the line. In a sharp line of the Symmetrical English, with many similarities to certain Sicilian variations, both sides delayed castling, while maneuvering for advantage. But White does not manage to castle, as Black brings some kingside pressure as the first time control (at move 30) is approaching. Having played f2-f4 early on, White's King, forced to f2 on move 26, is in some danger, but it takes Black a lot of time and effort to exploit this. He finally castles on move 28, bringing his KR into play, and steps up the pressure, with an eventual invasion on the queenside. White's final try with the sacrifice 43.Nxf6+ is desperation, but he does threaten mate, forcing Black to be alert to the end; Black's attack closes in with strong queen, rook, and knight square coverage; the mate is pleasing!
