Ken's passing is indeed a huge loss for American chess. I agree with Aris that Ken was a genuine chess person, friendly with everyone.
I met him at Minneapolis 2005, the HB Global Challenge, which had the largest guaranteed prize fund for an Open tournament to that juncture (500k US). We were both on the tournament staff as arbiters. It was something of a frantic event, since we were under strength for organizers, with a very tight time frame, and nine rounds over five days, and about 1,500 players. But Chief Arbiter Carol Jarecki instilled a tremendous 'work together, make this happen' attitude, and assigned arbiters in the optimal manner, so there were no conflicts at all among organizers. It was my first big American event, and I will remember Ken's spirit as being very important for the event's success!
Rest In Peace, my friend Ken.

    Respectfully,
