          Open Round 11 reporting:

Hello chess fans, please find below the closing reporting for the round-robin portion of the Open section. It's in multiple formats for your viewing pleasure, but most importantly, we need to confirm the top 4 players for the playoffs tomorrow. The top 4 players will play 4-game matches. 1st vs. 4th & 2nd vs. 3rd. The winner of each match qualifies from Canada to the World Cup.

(in case of a 2-2 tie in a playoff match, then the winner will be the player who finished higher in the round-robin, in other words 1st or 2nd)

          1st place: Razvan
          2nd place: Evgeny

then 3rd & 4th place need to be determined from 3rd-6th places, all with 6.5 points
the first tie-break is Direct Encounter, so since all of these players played each other, we can calculate:

3rd place: Raja (Direct Encounter tiebreak of 3-0)
4th place: Shiyam (Direct Encounter tiebreak of 2-1)

(then MaxG & Rohan had a Direct Encounter tiebreak of 0.5-2.5)

          therefore, THE PLAYOFF MATCHES:
          Razvan(1) vs. Shiyam (4)
          Evgeny(2) vs. Raja (3)

********* especially the players, WE START AT 4pm ON FRIDAY!!! *********

While that does not change anything, their tiebreak 0.5-2.5. (one draw, two losses).

Interesting playoffs are waiting us tomorrow.

EDITED: now I get your point, thank you, correcting it above.

P.S. to everyone, we DON'T verify Egis' duplicate records.

Hello everyone, after initial Fair Play analysis overnight, I am delighted to report that everything looks fine. More thorough analyses are still proceeding, and tonight's games will also be included.

And everyone playing tonight, please note that we are starting an hour earlier, at 4pm Eastern!!

Thank you, kind regards, Aris Marghetis, Chief Arbiter.

I would also like to take a moment to thank the fine staff at ICC for their dedicated "backroom" support of this event. We threw this all together rather quickly, and they always have 2-3 people available to me to get the little things done so that the tournament can roll successfully. Thanks also to Dr. Ken Regan, the World Champ of Fair Play analysis, for the tremendous work he completed overnight, and had waiting for me when I woke up today, and will do so again for tomorrow. Finally, thank you to the volunteer Appeals Committee (whom we've thankfully not had to engage yet). Should the need arise, Chair Pierre Denommee is waiting with his team of Michael von Keitz and Frank Dixon. Finally finally, thanks to you chess fans for making this a wonderfully fun week!

Kind regards, Aris Marghetis, Chief Arbiter.

                    • I've enjoyed watching so far, Aris. Any word on the cause for Bareev's time loss in Rd.4? A simple flag or was there some technical blip with his ICC connectivity? That one seemed strange. Of course, I've been known to space out with 5 mins left and fail to make a move.

Actually, the other Arbiter and I were discussing this situation, and as far as we know, he just ran out of time. He didn't say anything to the contrary, and we had to roll into the next round, and so on.

Don't expect indepth insights into opening theory or tactical shots, but I have enjoyed watching every day so far.
