    FTX Crypto Cup 2021

    May 17, 2021

This begins Sunday, May 23 and runs to May 31.

    The Line-up

    1 Magnus Carlsen
    2 Fabiano Caruana
    3 Ding Liren
    4 Ian Nepomniachtchi
    5 Levon Aronian
    6 Anish Giri
    7 Alexander Grischuk
    8 Shakhriyar Mamedyarov
    9 Wesley So
    10 Teimour Radjabov
    11 Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
    12 Alireza Firouzja
    13 Hikaru Nakamura
    14 Peter Svidler
    15 Daniil Dubov
    16 Alan Pichot

    Average rating 2783
    Average age 30.4

The whole top ten in the May ratings are there. The only player who you would be shocked to see win the event is 23-year-old Argentinian no. 1 Alan Pichot, who was voted back into the Tour by chess24 premium members, alongside 3-time World Blitz Champion Alexander Grischuk. (chess24)
Those 16 stars must be reduced to 8 players in the 3-day preliminary stage, where they play each other once at 15 minutes + 10-second increment per move rapid chess.
The Top 8 then play a knockout, with each clash held over two days of 4-game rapid matches. If the match score is tied we get a playoff, where two 5+3 blitz games are followed, if needed, by Armageddon. White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black.

A $100000 bitcoin bonus? What do they need 89500 in Bitcoin for? For that 112300 in bitcoin Nepo could buy a lot of super-computers...

Entertaining game of the day - Giri - Ding

I also enjoyed Caruana - Firoujza (if Fabi had only finished what he started!)

Beautiful from Dubov (33.Kh3), allowing Black to queen the c-pawn, but after f6! White would be winning!

A sad end, though - Daniil was winning at the end with Rxe3! but instead decided to take a draw by 3-fold repetition
