I guess you haven't encountered too many posts from Neil Frarey... My first reaction was the same as yours and then I saw it was from Neil - who tends to type first ... :)
200K dollars seems excessive (to me) but it is their money. As for "buying" the GM title - I don't think even that amount of money invested would garner a GM title without a
    great deal of actual ability.

Perhaps they noticed at a very young age that the young lad had some insight and they decided to go for it. (I have serious concerns about the
Saturday tournaments and their legitimacy, but FIDE rates them and doesn't seem to care so that makes them as legitimate as FIDE.)
Congratulations to the lad for getting a GM title and as some other GMs have said: "we will see soon enough how well he plays" (in real tournaments versus consistently
    strong(er) opposition).

I guess there are many parents out there who may have spent comparable amounts, but without similar results.
      Thanks!

From that article I found this comment by his father to be very compelling...

We are heavily invested in Abhimanyu's chess and we have spent in the range of US$200,000 (Rs.1 crore 40 lakhs!) and almost run out of complete savings.

Edit: Here's Amit's link for those who aren't paying attention ...or... for those who have an axe to grind, ha!

GM Mishra has proven himself a strong GM. Only 13 years of age and he has been invited to play in the Tata Steel tournament.
