Dr. Peter Sibbald (2045) -- Geoff McKay (2124), Kingston 1996, Kingston Championship Playoff (6). Played 1996-05-17. King's Gambit, Cunningham, C35. Time controls 30/90', SD/60'. TD: Jeff Towers, assistant Frank Dixon.

Geoff led Peter by a point going into this last round battle to decide the title. The playoff, also including Frank Dixon, was a double-round robin format. The top section was held in two separate round-robin groups; Geoff and Frank tied in 'A', Peter won 'B' clear. Geoff was the defending champion, while this was Peter's second major Kingston event, after he had convincingly won the 1995 Whig-Standard Championship five months earlier.
By replying to 1.e4 with 1...e5, Geoff had to know he would face the King's Gambit, which is Peter's regular choice. Geoff also plays this opening! So there was a lot of knowledge and strength coming to bear upon this game. Geoff opts for the Cunningham Defense with 3...Be7, and follows the recommendation of former World Champion Dr. Max Euwe from there. Black defuses some of White's buildup by exchanging one set of minors with 8...Ne3. Both players play very creatively, but Black manages to keep the balance, and reaches the time control at move 30 with a good position. The game is drawn at move 42 on Black's proposal; he probably stands a bit better at the end, but a draw was sufficient for the title. A game which does great credit to both protagonists!!
