Graham Allen (2188) -- Patrick Kirby (1980), Kingston Open (5), 1997. Played 1997-02-09. Time controls 30/90', SD/60'. Queen's Gambit, Cambridge Springs, D52. TD / Organizer: Larry Bevand; Assistant Frank Dixon.

OK, so White was not quite a Master! It is still an upset of over 200 rating points! This is a well-explored variation, named for the 1904 Cambridge Springs (Pennsylvania) International Tournament (won by Frank Marshall). One strong Canadian Master who plays the line frequently is Hans Jung, former magazine editor and City of Kitchener Chess Director. White's troubles began with 7.Bh4?!. He has at least three better moves, based on 365chess.com. These are: 7.Nd2 (the main line), 7.cxd5, and 7.Qb3. The game, between two talented Ottawa-area players, takes an interesting course, but Black seizes the initiative in the early middlegame, and trades punches with White, sacrificing the Exchange with 22...Rxf3! to fuel his attack, sending White's King on a perilous journey. White, on the verge of losing, tries the desperation sacrifice 32.Rxg7+!?, following up by pinning Black's queen with 33.Rg1, but Black has a nifty escape, with a knight check, followed by blocking the rook attack with the same knight 34...Ng3!! A game which Black can be very proud of!
