The oldest grandmaster in the world, 99-year-old Yuri Averbakh, was hospitalized in a Moscow hospital with a coronavirus. This was announced on Sunday, June 20, by the International Chess Federation on its official Twitter page.

Yuri Averbakh – Soviet chess player, leader of the Russian and international chess movement, international grandmaster, chess composer.
He was born on February 8, 1922 in Kaluga, has been playing chess since he was 3 years old.
The grandmaster contributed to the theory of openings. One of the variations in the King’s Indian Defense is called the Averbach system.
For achievements in the field of chess he was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples (1981), medals “For Labor Valor” (1957) and “For Valiant Labor. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of V. I. Lenin “(1970).
