  • Matsevskaya-Ouellet - what happened?

This question was brought up on the French Chesstalk.

In the Women's World Cup (round 1), the game Matsevskaya-Ouellet ended 1-0 in a completely drawn position. Does anyone know if it was a win on time (or some other reason)?

Miss Ouellet was clearly winning that game until just before the end but as you say it was roughly equal in the final position. Very strange.

I looked at parts of the round video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5uJoIJc0TM

If you skip ahead to about 5:13:00, you will see ta few remarks from the commentator. It sounds like he said "...and White should be happy with the draw". At 5:22:00, the commentator says "She won?" (sounding incredulous). Then after realizing Black's time has run out "...losing such a position on time should never happen.".

So it was a win on time for White.

Perhaps our young Canadian's inexperience told against her, in the stress and pressure of the biggest stage in chess. She had played very well, to get a clear advantage. Very unfortunate. It's happened to every player, at some juncture.
