US Seniors

[Hans Jung]

65 year old Larry Christiansen still has what it takes as he goes after the king to lead in the first round! https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...-Benjamin_Joel

[Victor Plotkin]

A very solid tournament. 3 players from St.-Petersburg, Russia - my native city.

[Michael Yip]

I thought Benjamin was a young guy! Now a senior?

[Hugh Brodie]

Benjamin is 57 years old. A "senior" for this event is 50 or older.

[Hans Jung]

Also Kaidanov gave a very nice demonstration of the better knight vs bishop to win and tie for the lead.

[Hans Jung]

What do you do when youre playing the foremost endgame expert in the US? - why you prove it to him in the endgame! I'm sure that is what Larry is doing although it might take a hundred moves.
Almost 100 moves but Larry Christiansen didnt win. Alex Fishbein, the endgame expert, squirmed out.

[Hans Jung]

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...Sokolin_Leonid Look at those knights!

[Hans Jung]

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...-Benjamin_Joel Kaidanov looked like he had fun in the tactical melee that Joel Benjamin initiated.
Its starting to look like a two man race between Kaidanov and Christiansen.

[Hans Jung]

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...stiansen_Larry 34...Nf4! and watch the rest of Black's pieces perform!

[Hans Jung]

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...idanov_Gregory Kaidanov continues to win nice games and is at 4.5 from 5, Larry Christiansen a half point back.

[Victor Plotkin]

I am rooting for my good friend Leonid Sokolin who is the only IM in this event. 2.5 / 5 - not too bad.

[Hans Jung]

I am surprised at the score of Alex Fishbein. I would have thought he was the weakest player in this event but he has 3 from 5. A mix of good fortune and good prep?

[Hans Jung]

Definitely the most entertaining round so far. Khachiyan - Novikov, Kaidanov - Fishbein, and Shabalov - Christiansen hugely entertaining!

[Hans Jung]

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...bein_Alexander A highly entertaining game!

https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...t-Novikov_Igor As was this one!

Kaidanov now leads the field by one point.

[Hans Jung]

and then there was this struggle: https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...stiansen_Larry Larry Christiansen landed a few punches (metaphorically speaking) and managed to keep Shaba on the defensive. Not an easy thing to do.
