  • 2021 Banff Open Nov 12-14. Entries now open

The 2021 Banff Open is back after a one year hiatus due to Covid-19. Registration is now open. Please go to the link under the Schedule 2021 tab. Only the first hundred entries will be accepted. This is the only tournament in Canada to receive a FIDE Aid package, which will most likely produce the largest prize fund in the Banff Open's five year history. FIDE has added large women and veteran(over 50/65) prizes. Many thanks to all our sponsors including the Alberta Chess Association, FIDE, Banff Centre, our anonymous Armageddon sponsor and the Society of Chess Aficionados (SoCA).

You can enter via the ACA webpage here http://www.albertachess.org/home/202...21-banff-open/
Congrats to Hans Jung and Ian Findlay for being the first to enter!
Here are some Chessbase reports on the tournament by our defending champion Agnieszka Matras-Clement. https://en.chessbase.com/post/banff-...ageddon-finale

Must one be fully vaccinated to enter? Well, not to enter, but to participate in November?

What criteria will be used to determine "large women"? lol

Vaccinations will not be required to enter. It may even be against the Privacy Act to make people disclose that information.

We prefer of course that people are vaccinated but if they are not, that they wear masks. This will be on the honor system. The wearing of mask policy may change if the Alberta Government changes their policy before the tournament, but as of now masks are recommended but not mandatory.

I am please to announce than IM Brian Hartman has agreed to play. We are honored in that this seems to be the only tournament Brian plays in anymore. He claims that you can easily pick up rating points by playing him, but don't be so sure! Brian got his title in 1992. He represented Canada at the 1984 Olympiad and was the captain in 2004 where he showed he was also a hall of fame fundraiser. Below are a couple of his gems from back in the day.

I played against Brian once in Kitchener with white and somehow survived after a very difficult endgame.

Ian, you can add 1 IM and 1 FM from Plotkins.

Great news!! With Mark's current 2549 current CFC rating, he becomes the highest rated player in Banff Open history. Victor I sent you a private email with more information.

I am delighted to announce the entry of IM David Cummings to the 2021 Banff Open. David received his IM title in 1984 and has represented Canada at the 2000 Chess Olympiad. He is the author of the Symmetrical English and in 2015 David won the Pan American Senior Over 50 Tournament. More recently, he has played Board 1 on Canada's Senior Team at the World Senior Team Championships along with other entries Victor Plotkin and Ian Findlay. We are just missing Michael Baron to complete our squad!

Also good news for people travelling by air within Canada. As of now, there is only a temperature check at the airport and quarantining is not required at this time. We are now up to 29 entries.
                  See player list at bottom.

I am delighted to announce that Agnieszka Matras-Clement has entered the tournament. Agnieszka is our defending champion and she and her husband Paul do a fabulous job of writing up the tournament report to Chessbase after the tournament. As per her webpage Jumping Knight Chess 'A Women International Master and member of Chess Olympic Team Canada. Agnieszka is one of the top rated Canadian women chess player and the current Alberta women's champion. She is a former European and world champion (both in the U20 category). Agnieszka has over 15 years of experience in teaching and is officially registered as a coach by the Alberta Chess Association.'

I would also like to apologize to Hans Jung for omitting his FM title on the pre-registration list. That has been corrected.

This year 10% of our prize money is going to females. This is a result of receiving a FIDE Aid package, whereby we are bound to do so. Personally, I am all in favour of encouraging female participants, so it will be an interesting experiment. So far we only have 2 females out of 31 entrants. Hopefully the female prizes will attract more females!

Its ok Ian, you are doing a great job.

Ive wanted to go to your great event ever since it started about 5 years ago and this year its happening! A first class tournament with one of the best scenic views in Canada right outside the tournament hall window. My wife Anne will do sight seeing while I get 3 full days of chess immersion and then I will join her. With all the chess playing I am also looking forward to sharing stories with Brian. I looked over the games you provided for nostalgia and sure enough its the Brian I knew and feared. The Plotkins company I always enjoy, Victor is the voice of reason and Mark is full of enthusiasm and chess artistry. Mark Ginsburg I dont know in person but I know him through Chess Chow. David is always good for pleasant conversation and I enjoy watching his games - he seems always to find the correct positional method. Agnieszka is such a strong player. I saw the playoff video two years ago and her skills were quite evident. As for you Ian I will finally get to meet your better half. Cant wait. It will be an incredible tournament.

Alberta has introduced some COVID measures which may still be in effect during our tournament. They are:

Temporary measures to reduce transmission and protect our health care system come into effect September 4 at 8 a.m. These public health actions are required due to rising cases and hospitalizations, largely in unvaccinated Albertans.
                          • Masks are mandatory in all indoor public spaces and workplaces.
                          • Restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, nightclubs and other licensed establishments must stop serving alcohol by 10 p.m.
                          • Employers are recommended to continue work-from-home measures where possible, and to pause or revert plans to have staff return to work.
                          • Unvaccinated Albertans are strongly recommended to limit indoor social gatherings to close contacts of only 2 cohort families, up to a maximum of 10 people.
In addition, the Banff Open will comply with the ACA COVID Policy here:
                          http://www.albertachess.org/wp-conte...9-Policies.pdf

The good news is that we are up to 47 entries, including the latest master to enter, Zachary Dukic at 2365. http://www.albertachess.org/home/202...21-banff-open/
