  • 2021 US Championship - commentary on games

Rd1 Both Fabiano Caruana and Lenier Dominguez dodged bullets when their opponents (Bruzon and Lenderman) mishandled endgames.

John Burke played good defensive chess and a nice passed pawn endgame to cash in to the win.

Ray Robson got a great position against the Alekhine defence and handled his opponent's tricks with a successful king walk and is now tied for the lead with John Burke. Great start for both

Rd1 Lots of upsets in the women's. Tatev Abrahamian and Anna Zatonskih both destroyed good positions. Irina Krush won a nice game.

Rd 2 Wesley So - beautiful game by Wesley So. Us punters would like to build such a position out of the opening but we never quite get there - and then Wesley's pieces came alive - almost magically - such domination!

Daniel Naroditsky - nice win - Blacks position came apart very fast towards the end - one of Jeffery Xiong's worst losses recently.

Rd 2 Yip - Abrahamyan The best game of the round. White won the queen and kept attacking.

Rd 3 Fabiano Caruana finally scored and in a big way. Black's position crumbled all over the board.

Jeffrey Xiong cracked and let the rook in on the seventh and Sam Sevian had himself a big win. Tied for first.

Also Alex Lenderman and Ray Robson are having great tournaments.

Rd 3 Eswaran had a dream position against Nemcova (knight in a closed position with all the breaks) but mishandled it. Nemcova (the leader) has had all her opponents hand over points. That too is chess.

Havent looked at all the games - too busy.

But Rd 4 Alex Lenderman important win over Naroditsky.
and Ray Robson nice final moves against Xiong. Jeffrey Xiong crash and burn?

Ray Robson in clear first with 3 out ot 4. Good for Ray Ray!

Rd 4 Irina Krush big blunder in tense fighting game. Carissa Yip took advantage and now tied for first. Lets hope Irina can recover.

Rd 5 Huge upset. Naroditsky beat Caruana. Fab Fabi was outplayed in the late middlegame and went into a bad knight vs awesome bishop endgame. Heckuva game by Daniel Naroditsky.

Alex Lenderman is playing a beautiful two bishop endgame against Sam Sevian but does he have enough time to convert?

and he does it - 140 moves! Alex Lendermans reward? - a tie for first with Ray Robson!

It seems in both tournaments the veterans are struggling. I love it! (it means more fighting chess!) For sure the veterans have to step up with their A game.

Rd 6 The two leaders are playing each other. Completely different styles. Alex Lenderman looks like he's playing beginner chess out of the opening but in reality he is extremely well prepared (the computer likes it). Should be interesting developments.

After Robsons ambitious Nd5 Lenderman plays the surprising, strong, and delightful 0-0-0 on an open board!

Fascinating endgame. Lenderman has the two bishops and pressure.

Rd 6 Maurice is talking about retreating moves. In the game Sharevich - Yip after move 6 White has the perfect Fred Reinfeld opening setup. Yip's Qa5 is actually a very bad move but only the retreating move 7.Bd2! exposes it. Sharevich has played it and Black is in deep trouble.https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2021...na-Yip_Carissa

                              Sharevich missed her chances.
