I could never fill the void that Wayne left, he covered so much that was interesting in the world of chess commentary. But I can comment in my own style. Thanks guys for the support.

Wesley So is a great player. He did not play his best but still won the event. Congrats to Fabiano Caruana who made a hell of a comeback and was so close to winning after a great playoff game against Wesley. Congrats to Sam Sevian who is going to become some player. Leinier Dominguez played great chess and would have deserved more. Ray Robson had a great start.

Those playoff were crazy! Only in the last game did the result match the play.

Lenderman played a great tournament, what a fighter he was. Very good comeback by Fabi, from disastrous tournament to playoffs. Dominguez and So must be disappointed, they had chances to win, but failed to take some of their opportunities. Great tournament by Sam Sevian , he is a strong player and still young and in the playoffs. Ray Robson also had a good tournament. Chess is a great sport and ratings do not mean everything.

Kudos to Alex Lenderman. What a fighter! more long endgames than anyone else. and deep opening preparation. Draws against So, Dominguez, and Robson, a tough loss to Caruana, and a win against Sam Sevian. A couple of early half points may have come back to haunt him but regardless a fantastic tournament! At 2607 pre tournament Alex must have performed well above 2700.

I thought +3 or +4 would win the US championship but + 2 meant a tie for first. What a tight, fighting field!

    Caruana, Sevian and So 6.5
    Dominguez and Robson 6

and Lenderman 5.5 and Bruzon 3.5 still playing. Just that one game left.

Alex Lenderman held a draw in that tortuous endgame. Vociferous debate between commentators Christian Chirila, Yasser Seirawan, and Maurice Ashley. Maurice had a similar endgame against Dimitry Gurevich in 1989 and learned that you had to keep the defending side king as far away from the action as possible in order for the queen to have space to maneuver. He claimed that Lendermans king was in the danger zone and with virtually no time to think Lenderman was lost. Christian said that the endgame tablebase claimed draw - move after move. Bravo to Alex Lenderman for knowing that endgame and carrying it off with seconds on the clock!

Sam Shankland held the draw against Fabiano Caruana and even outplayed him in the later stages! Awesome!

John Burke won a nice attacking miniature against Xiong in the last round. His - 1 finish is a great result. Even though he was lowest rated by far he played with confidence and good preparation.

Both Sevian and So drew their games very quickly in the last round to leave the door open for Caruana to finish clear first. But Sam Shankland could play the hero if he holds a draw against Caruana. Nice queen sacrifice Sam!
