  • 31st NATO Chess Championship Belgium 2021 - Team Canada

    Good luck to the 3 players representing Canada at the 31st NATO Chess Championship hosted by Belgium in the Flemish coastal towns of Blankenberge.

    From 10 to 14 October 2021, 99 players from 15 NATO countries will fight on the chess board but will built the friendship that is so important to NATO collaboration.

    The team is composed of
    • Leading-Seaman Samuel Heran-Boily (current Canadian Military Champion)
    • Major Fernando Echevarria-Hidalgo (team captain)
    • Captain François Simard

    They voluntered to proudly represent Canada as we could not built a full team this year due to the pandemic.

        Thanks Alex! Aris.. indeed this Championship is considered one of the best chess event in the world!

        Our 3 representatives did very well considering the strong opposition. Canada finished 14/15 countries. At 3 players only, they did as good as our last year result! (a team score is the best 4 of 6 players)

        • François Simard: 3.5/6 points 51/99
        • Fernando Echevarria-Hidalgo: 3/7 points 68/99
        POLAND is the new NATO Chess Team Champion ahead of Greece and Germany, the defending champion.

        YOU ARE A CHESS PLAYER INTERESTED BY A CAREER IN THE MILITARY?
        We are looking for strong chess players (ELO 2000+) as we would like to become more competitive and who knows.. make it to the top 3!
        There are multiple career opportunities in the Canadian Forces, either full or part time. For a chess players, it means playing in a high level international tournament every year to represent Canada. Next NATO Chess Championship will be hosted by Estonia, 27 June - 01 July 2022 and the following years are Slovenia (2023), Greece (2024), Latvia (2025) adnd Italy (2026).
