Just a quick note (I'm scrambling to get somewhere today), the CCYC is planning an IM norm event for the first week in January, in Richmond Hill.

We already have more than the required mix of 10 players, and I would say there's a 50-50 chance we'll have two sections. I'll post more within days.

Lefong Hua had a number of norm events in pre Covid times in Montreal. Free site (College Brebeuf), and foreigners were usually visiting foreign university students or nearby Americans.

Definitely long time! Well it depends on what kind of norms you want to produce. Let us say CMA desires 'quality' norms with 3 IMs in the 2375-2425 range. The main problem is getting the appropriate number of foreigners. By luck, FM Mark Lyell(ENG) is a permanent resident in BP so he great eases the worry of getting enough foreigners by playing in pretty well every IM RR. You will have to overcome this hurdle with creativity. The next barrier is getting a cheap site. CMA has its own building so this problem is solved. I would try for a summer Norm Tour for example May-June-July-August with 2 RRs per month with 1st prize cash(just pick something like 1000 CAN). start with an IM norm tour and see how it goes, an build up to IM and GM norms. Thee is the problem of getting a large pool of FIDE rated players. This is a second major problem. You could consider offering monthly FIDE rated tournaments. The background here is that Hungary does not have an equivalent to a national rating system or a CMA rating system, let alone an FQE system. Kids get a FIDE rating very early and it is a huge advantage in the norm business. You might have to do something creative to reduce the cost of lodging for traveling players- I am not sure what to suggest here. If CMA can manage a summer tour this would be a massive achievement.

The organizer (and friends of) asked if I was interested to play in the FM group of Vezerkepzo and I politely declined. This is a copycat of the First Saturday series that schedules events in the second half of each month. This seems like a shame at first as in theory I could be playing in two sets of tournaments each month and I am only living here to play/study chess. I am not a desperate tourist any more and have a fairly good idea of what is happening. There is a small core of foreign players living here that also does not play in this type of tournament. These are tourist events or for norm seekers. The Budapest Team Ch has just started and this combined with local events give me more than I can handle. Now I spend my time training to get 12 more elo points and reach 2000(again!) which I was only in June this year. The competition is fierce here, I have to work very hard just to be a normal level player

Thanks Victor. Duh... I hadn't even noticed there were no GMs so of course the only possibility would be an IM norm. Clearly the average rating is way too low too.
Maybe he is over there and is just tuning up for a "real" tournament soon (sorry to imply that these norm tournaments are not "real" but that is the impression we have been given - somewhat staged and perhaps too much manipulation of the mix of players.)

Any idea what score was needed for a GM or IM norm? I guess he is looking for an IM norm?

GM norm is obviously out of question in this tournament (no GMs). With very low average rating a player needs at least 7/9 to get IM norm. So, even the winner likely couldn't achieve it.
