  • New Montreal chess cafe....

With the demise of Cafe Pi, Montreal chess players have found a new home a few blocks away - Kofi Crepe at 4483 St. Denis - around the corner from the Mont-Royal Metro station. Well lit, spacious, good menu (no alcohol), and an accommodating owner. Closes at 10 pm, and at midnight Friday and Saturday. As many as 20 players showed up one night last week.

Hugh, what does it take that players are not thrown out of the cafe? How much do they need to spend per night?

Everyone is buying something - even if it's just a coffee. No one seems to be hassling you to buy something, but everyone knows the "unwritten rule" - i.e. buy something. There are few other people in the place in the evening (I think it's known for its breakfasts), so it's more business for them. Masks when standing; optional when seated or eating/drinking.

Its so good that they have found a new cafe to play in Montreal. What is Canada's best chess scene without a cafe to play in. (yes Ive said it - Canada's best chess scene = Montreal).

You're lucky in Montreal, here in Toronto we don't have the option of removing our masks when eating/drinking. We have to drink (coffee) through our masks!
