There's another company pursuing this already called niftychess.

Frankly, when you buy an NFT you aren't buying the actual thing; if you by a cryptopunk or BAYC, you aren't really buying the specific piece of art. You're buying the provenance that proves you have the original as certified by whatever body is claiming to have the ability to certify it. The value comes from how much you value the provenance that the body is providing it.

So, let's say I decide to create an NFT of "Canada's greatest chess games". The first one on offer is Spraggett-Sokolov, final playoff game. You aren't buying the game per se, you're just buying my willingness to say "you own the David Ottosen created NFT of Spraggett-Sokolov". Maybe some people think this has value; probably most don't. Now assume Spraggett launches his own NFT line, and the first one up for sale is Spraggett-Sokolov, final playoff game. Probably more people would consider that valuable.

Essentially, when you value an NFT, you should consider three things:

    1) Do you like the "thing" you're buying
    2) Do you trust the body providing the provenance to not dilute or corrupt the rarity of what you've bought (eg, if I issued my NFT, are you confident I won't just issue 50,000 more Spraggett-Sokolov NFTs)
    3) Do you think others will share your feelings on the first two points

IMO a ChessBase backed NFT probably has a decent chance. It's a well established company with a lot of importance/respect in the chess world that isn't likely to blow it up by screwing people. The niftychess company above I stayed away from. Probably my biggest concern would be someone like Kramnik authorizing this ChessBase NFT, but subsequently launching their own and diluting it.

Of course, the real problem is that if this is a good idea, Timex will outbid all of us on it. If he's not bidding, it's probably a bad idea :D

Isn't ChessBase still weaseling copyright violations?
