  • The Mayor's Gaffe

Perhaps my most embarassing moment in chess came in 1971 during Boris Spassky's participation in the CNE Open. The then Mayor of Toronto William Denisson asked me to bring the World Champ to a display of an inuit chess set carved in Walrus (?) tusk and on a sealskin board all listed at several thousand dollars. Thinking this would be a presentation (although I couldn't imagine what Boris would think of it), I thought "how nice!" Boris smiled while the press cameras flashed.
The Mayor's next words made me want to sink into a crack in the floor. "Would you like to buy it?" said Hissonor!
This all came back to me while reading the current mayor's announcement that he would not be seeking reelection.

There was a funny situation with that and a good experience for the future, wasn't it? We never know what's gonna happen in such sutuations. It is really hard to even predict what would be next?
