The meaning of rating in brackets is confusing: performance rating? CFC, USCF, or FIDE? And is not applied to each players best performance of the year. Perhaps the score against GMs is more significant than performance.

I attempted to put into context International events. The rating in brackets is the average rating of the opponents of the top ten players in an event.

I have tried to focus on raw results as opposed to performance ratings.

It would take a very stunning performance for me to not pick someone who was awarded the GM title. There are some good solid performances among the other nominees, but nothing that trumps the Hambleton accomplishment. Maybe the easiest choice so far for me.

Yes that was what I was thinking.

OTOH, being awarded the GM title recognizes chess accomplishments from previous years, not necessarily the year in question.
