The National Final, which is being held on-line again this year, got underway yesterday with teams from all 10 provinces. After 5 rounds, 3 provinces have won all their matches: British Columbia (55 game points out of 60), Ontario (53 game points) and Quebec (50 game points).

Chris Dawson from Newfoundland & Labrador is in charge of our magical scoreboard. Results are posted live!

The event is organized and sponsored by the Chess'n Math Association, Canada's National Scholastic Chess Organization. This is the 33rd edition.

      Hi Hans,

Quebec (lead by Virginie Roux) and Ontario (lead by Francis Rodrigues) took two different approaches to the event this year. Ontario was all on-line. According to Leslie Armstrong, long time Ontario coordinator who has retired but is still actively involved, a number of the Ontario top players do not play in on-line events because of the potential of cheating. For Quebec, the provincials were in-person.

For the Nationals, the Quebec team played from the CMA headquarters in Montreal. Out of town players were compensated for lodging etc. There was team spirit, team meetings between rounds etc. Saturday night, a team meal at a local resto. Going into the last round a major team meeting as they had to beat Ontario to win.

I really think that is what made the difference.

The last round also saw Alberta beat B.C., to finish ahead of them in the final standings. Interesting that Quebec struggled against B.C. earlier in the event and Ontario had no problem with that team.

A great finish to a great event!

Next year it will be an in-person competition....finally!

PEI has first option. They have to declare by August 1st. Should they bow out, the Nationals will be held in Montreal over the long May weekend.
