With these characters of the past there was sometimes an important chess connection. Richard May was a mentor for the very young Stijn De Kerpel. Stijn grew up in a rich chess culture and a love of tournament chess and years later was an important part of the Ottawa chess community. Through my friendship with Stijn I had an introduction to Flemish culture and that led to exploring Flemish history. Stijn also influenced many Ottawa chess players. Thats an example of how chess connections spread positively from generation to generation.
