https://www.chess.com/article/view/c...d-and-the-ugly I often enjoy GM Serpers columns but this one is particularly thought provoking. At first I played through both Nakamura Immortals against the computers (from move one to the end!) - great fun! but its at the end of the article (last 3 paragraphs) that the true message comes out. Much food for thought.

His point is that he's devoted his life to chess and it needs to be as serious as possible. It's ok to be enchanted by chess as a source of fun and entertainment.

He's an old man shaking his fist at a cloud.

I'm fine with most of his article until the end: "I see no excuse for top players to deliberately play bad chess"

Even if we disregard the arrogance of knowing what "good chess" is with absolute certainty (how many GMs decried Duncan Suttles in his early years as a garbage player using bad openings, only to adopt them later?), being a top player doesn't preclude you from enjoying the game and challenging yourself by playing unfamiliar or difficult positions.

In the end, if we want to see the most beautiful perfect chess possible, we'll watch computers, and Serper can kick rocks.
