  • Canadians in Kazakhstan

GMs Aman Hambleton and Eric Hansen played in the World Rapid championship in Kazakhstan. Magnus Carlsen won with 10/13. Unfortunately the Canadians didn't do as well - Aman finished with 6/13, and Eric withdrew after having 3/6 (including a forfeit loss in round 6).

Both are registered for the blitz - 21 rounds over two days (Dec. 29 and 30). First round is at 4 am EST on the 29th, and 3 am (round 13) on the 30th, with subsequent rounds starting every half hour.

Ameet Ghasi, under the England flag, also lives in Canada now. He's also in Kazakhstan. Been awesome to follow the event, watching the Leko / Gustaffson commentary.

After all 21 rounds of blitz: Eric had 11/21; Aman had 10/21.

Even with losses in round 15 (Nepo) and round 19 (Sarana) Carlsen still won with 16/21. Nakamura and Martirosyan drew too many games in the second day to finish with 15/21.

Not all smooth sailing, Carlsen was down a rook against Rapport, but managed to queen a pawn.

Decent results in the blitz by Eric and Aman. Eric started with 3 out of 5 against 2700's including wins against Grischuk, Amin and Sarin.
