  • The King Game

Has anybody ever heard of this, it's a game I have been showing people for years, probably some stranger in a bar told me about it.

The game is played using only the two kings. The white king starts on a1, the black king on a8. The objective for White is for his king to reach one of the three squares f8, g8, or h8. The objective for Black is simply to prevent the white king from reaching his destination. Obviously these objectives are accomplished using the principles of the opposition. There's some nifty tricks here, and it drives 'em crazy when I win ten games in a row from both sides.

I hadn't heard of this one. Could be an interesting "mini-game" for teachers.

    Is it 1.Ka2 [only move] +- ?

yes. Another interesting point is that I do believe that, unless your opponent already has the opposition, there is always only one correct t move and a couple of losing ones.

And after I show people this game, I show them a K&P v K endgame. The connection is obvious.

      have fun with it.
