  • GM Eliskases

https://en.chessbase.com/post/rememb...-february-1997 There's a lot I learned about Eliskases - he was second to Alekhine in Alekhine's return match with Euwe. Also a young Mecking was a student of his. He also played first board for Germany in 1939 Olympics which won the gold. His smartest move might have been staying in Argentina in 1939. There's a certain attraction to his games, crisp tactics and nice positional play.

Did Eliskases not play a young Bobby Fischer?

Fischer played Eliskases twice in 1960, with a win each. Fischer won in Mar del Plata, and lost in Buenos Aires.

I thought so. I believe one of the games was in 60 memorable games, no?

Thanks, Hans. Interesting! 'Eliskases' is one of those names I've encountered fairly often over the years but I never knew anything about him. I found another bio while looking for online books by or about him. It has some detail not contained in the Chessbase article. The two complement each other to a degree.

Great find Peter! I enjoyed reading it. (I cant imagine starting out in the Schlechter chess club, being editor in chief of the Wiener Schachzeitung, being a second to Alekhine, and finishing as a honorary member of the Capablanca chess club amongst so many other laurels - boggles the mind).

I remember him primarily for his win over Capablanca at Semmering-Baden, 1937. Granted Capa was 49 years old at the time, but the way Eliskases outplayed him in a bishop & pawn endgame was exceptional and showed great vision.
