Sambuev-Noritsyn draw? Sambuev is a clear piece up. Typo? DGT problems?

[edit] Result has been changed to 1-0.

Rd 8 Mikhalevski - Ivanov what a battle! What was wrong with the immediate 39...Rxf2?

        Plotkin - Atanasov stalemate entertainment

Going into the last round IM Posthuma leads with 6 - a full point ahead of a three way tie for second.

Please correct the Posthuma's federation to USA.

In the Qualifier Jordan Clyde and Aaron Mendes tied for first. It seems the tiebreaks were equal. Was there a playoff?

Interestingly the last round game between Posthuma and Atanasov is a norm game. If Posthuma wins he gets the GM norm, if Atanasov wins he gets the IM norm (hopefully that is correct based on previous postings)

Right you are Hans! A norm for either of them will require a decisive result. They have both shown plenty of pluck in this event.

The playoff between Clyde-Mendes was a roller coaster. After 4 rapid games, Mendes prevailed in blitz. Great stuff.

Indeed! Lawrence would call it "Queen versus bits". The bits did their bit!

IM Joshua Posthuma won the tournament at 6.5 with a last round battling draw. I thought he might win the game after winning two pieces for a rook but FM Atanasov defended well. What a battle! In fact there were many great battles throughout the tournament.

So close to getting a GM norm.

IM Artiom Samsonkin opted to go to Charlotte to try for a GM norm there:

IM Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratte is playing in the C section where players are trying for an IM norm.

I really think someone should do a video and write up of these top players - the amount of energy expended 8 hours of extreme tournament chess a day for 4 and a half days. Definitely chess is a thinking sport and these are real chess athletes.
