The Montreal Chess Club dates back to 1844. Originally meeting in private homes, it became more public a couple of decades later. Frank Marshall developed his chess there as a teenager, and won the club championship a couple of times in the 1890's before moving to New York. He returned regularly for simuls over the next 20-30 years.

The Club found a permanent home in the early 1900's in Westmount's Victoria Hall - taking the name of "Westmount Chess Club" for a while. Unfortunately - a fire in January 1924 destroyed most of the club's records. It found new quarters at Guy and St Catherine in downtown Montreal where it stayed for the next 10-15 years. A large banquet was held in 1944 for the 100th anniversary.

The next couple of decades found it moving among several locations downtown - ending up in a restaurant evenings and weekends (the restaurant catered to the office lunchtime crowd, so it was free during off-hours). It was here that Ignas Zalys claimed to have won "thousands" at money games.

From the 1960's though the 1990's, the Club lived mostly in name alone, although there were brief attempts to revive it. It was the 2002 closure/sale/merger of the Chess Specialist wit Chess and Maths on St Denis that revived the name again, and where it has remained ever since. It's not a formal "club", but regular tournaments are organized on Wednesday nights, and the Club championship every June.
