General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!

organizing a tournament just for a candidates spot
Where there is abuse of legality, such that an innocent becomes a victim, the authorities should intervene with their discretion to prevent the abuse, and change the rule immediately (Conditional on getting proper approval (AGM?) at the proper time).
Firouzja drew his last game. 5.5/6 was not enough to pass So. I predict another attempt by him or his sponsors in the nearest future. Still, we have 9 days before the end of the year. A lot of time.
Forouzja, is doing nothing wrong, FIDE must rate this event you can't change the rules at the last minute. don't blame the players because they find away to take advantage of a rule just change them for the next cycle!
Couldn't So and Firouzja BOTH arrange matches right up until the deadline to try and raise their ratings in a race against time?
Maybe a chess clock could be used to count down to the deadline! LOL
This is just a symptom of a bigger disease ... just how close the elite players are to each other, excepting perhaps Magnus. There are all these players bunched up, Magnus is supreme against them all, and computer engines are supreme against even Magnus. It's all a Shakespearean comedy of errors followed religiously as if any of it matters.
I'm wondering if this could happen in tennis .... the #129 world-ranked player trying to arrange a match against some other lower player to raise his or her rating and sneak into a Grand Slam event. But in tennis, ELO ratings are not used in that way. There are wild card matches for players to try and "sneak" into the lowest Grand Slam spots.
My understanding is that FIDE will not count his previous "event", so Firouzja needs to gain 7 rating points in this Open, which is not going to be easy...
0.2 The tournaments to be rated shall be pre-registered by the federation in whose territory it is held and they will be responsible for the submission of results and rating fees. Council may additionally designate these rights and responsibilities to Affiliated Organisations that are representing an autonomous territory which is contained within no more than one Federation.
The tournament and its playing schedule must be registered:
0.2.1 Not later than 30 days before the tournament starts, if one of the players in the tournament is rated in excess of 2700, or a female player rated in excess of 2500.
0.2.2 Otherwise, three days before the tournament starts.
The QC Chairman may refuse to register a tournament.
Exceptions to permit tournaments to be rated even though it is registered later than the prescribed notice period may be granted:
0.2.3 Tournaments in category 0.2.1: With the approval of the President
0.2.4 Tournaments in category 0.2.2: With the approval of the QC Chairman
All tournaments played under Hybrid conditions as described in 2.1 must be approved individually by the QC Chairman.
In exceptional cases involving tournaments with an average rating in excess of 2700, after consultation with the QC Chairman, the Council or the President may approve tournaments or individual games for rating which have not been submitted for rating by the national federation.
0.3 Tournament reports for all official FIDE and Continental events must be submitted and shall be rated. The Chief Arbiter is responsible for submitting the rating report file to the FIDE Rating Administrator.
0.4 FIDE reserves the right not to rate a specific tournament. The organiser of the tournament has the right to appeal to the QC. Such an appeal must be made within seven days of the communication of the decision.
0.4 isn't new, FIDE reserve the right not to rate a specific tournament. FIDE has the right to refuse, but should it refuse, I leave that to them.
According to the revised rules, only the FIDE President can give the derogation stated in 0.2.1 .
Instead of speaking of FIDE, we should be thinking of our own tournaments and of the possibility that someone would try to qualify by rating for the Olympic Team or the Zonal with suspicious tournaments organized solely for this purpose.

OMG the world of professional chess just keeps twisting itself into knots of "competition complexity".....
Is chess the only professional game that needs anti-cheating software and analysis?
Chess is the simplest game that is 100% skill based and is being played professionally ... correct? Unless checkers is still being played professionally? Go is of course much more complicated than chess.
And holding that title, chess is thus a game that occupies a unique niche spot in the world. And look at it, the view is terrible. Possible strip searches during or after bathroom breaks.... that has been very bad press for chess .... Now we have this new contagion:
"SUSPICIOUS TOURNAMENTS"
meaning tournaments that are organized to beat some deadline for rating points ......
My understanding is that FIDE will not count his previous "event", so Firouzja needs to gain 7 rating points in this Open, which is not going to be easy...

Feels like this is simple enough to get around. Just register a bunch of tournaments before the deadline, and if you don't need them, just withdraw.
I quite liked the system they had at the previous Candidates, I think they did it for two cycles. With the Grand Prix mini-pools, 16 players in 4 pools of 4, winners played semis and finals, and accumulated points that way. It wasn't perfect and probably quite expensive. But for that moment in FIDE cycles, they ditched the rating spot. No shenanigans. Qualify by playing and performing in official events. The rating favourites should demonstrate why they're higher rated. Not by farming points by beating up on 2400s, or flying across the Atlantic to play 5 rounds in a 9-rounder and then shamefully withdrawing, or begging some local organizer to create a last minute tournament that meets some criteria.
I disagree with the "averaging rating pools" over a period of time. This actively discourages the top players from playing, since sitting on their rating and playing as little as possible favours their chances.
Maybe I missed it but I didn't see the word unethical in this thread. Is Firouzja to be respected for what he did? As someone said, he didn't break any rules. Maybe each of the 2750+ players should keep 5 or 6 2400 players on retainer so that if they're in a situation where rating points are needed quickly they'll have a tournament ready to go at a moment's notice. Who the hell needs grandmasters? Want to see a nice game? Buy a book or a chess-playing program.
p.s. They used different methods to attempt to inflate their ratings but, at the core, is there any essential difference between Firouzja and Niemann? If FIDE decides to deal further with F's 'special tournament' by levying a stronger penalty than just refusing to rate it, maybe the stronger penalty should be along these lines: since F. apparently likes to play with the fishies, drop his official rating to 2400 and let him spend a couple of years clawing his way back up to the top.
