  • Michael Scherbak - R.I.P.

Montreal chessplayer Michael (or Michel) Scherbak died at the age of 85. Not much is mentioned about his life in the obit - but I believe he came from the Ukraine or Poland (depending on where the border was at the time) in the early 1950's. (his original name until about 1955 was "Szczerbak" - as recorded on scoresheets of the late Ignas Zalys - but the funeral service is at St. Sophie's Ukrainian cathedral).

He was a regular competitor in Montreal touranents in the 1950's and 1960's - and would have been rated 1900-2000 with today's ratings. My database has 18 of his games between 1953 and 1980.

    Some results:

    14th (out of 19) in a strong Montreal City Championship 1953 (round-robin!).
    14th-16th (out of 22) - 1954 Montreal City Championship.
    9th (out of 19) - 1956 Montreal City Championship.
He lost in the finals of the 1956 Montreal Knockout Championships (not chess-boxing!) to Roelf Westra.
