General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
Hart House Reading Week - Great Job by Organizers!
Hart House Reading Week - Great Job by Organizers!
I just wanted to congratulate Alex Ferreira and his team for an extraordinary job of organizing and directing this yearly event. The last day was marred by a blackout in downtown Toronto, which started at 4:30 am on Monday morning. Alex and his team scrambled to provide lighting and additional supervision to make the last round happen. Low and behold at approx. 6:30 pm, the lights came back on. This was very important as it was next to impossible to see how much time was left on your clock.
I have notice the various improvements since playing hear starting around 2016.. All the rounds staring on time. Water available before each round. Sets and clocks provided. I am not sure when each of these improvements took place, but well done. On a sadder note, parking has become a great challenge with this event. I will have to research it better next year, as the organizers did provide a parking map, but sadly I parked using Green P which cost me $100 for the tournament. Also, it seems each year, one has to walk farther and farther to find food or coffee.

By the end of the year the parking problem will hopefully be resolved as just south of Hart House they are building the entrance to the new parking garage beneath King's College Circle.
Some interesting games - e.g. the R4 game V.Plotkin - Chiku-Ratte - White's K+Q couldn't beat Black's K+B+N. Even though the tablebases show wins in about 30 moves from just about any position, it's different when you have less than a minute on the clock and just the 30-second increment to keep you alive.

Interesting. Back in the 80's it was generally thought to be a draw if the B and N got the right set up.
Thank you, Ian. I actually do fairly little compared to before, people see me on the microphone and I am the water-boy.
Really, it's an amazing team that makes it work, from Hart House this weekend:
Victor Zheng - the young man who does it all Tanner McNamara - arbiter turned lighting technician Bowen Zhang - secured the kids' event, assisted with adults Deepanshi Matai - photographer turned arbiter Grace Miao - organizer turned arbiter - also does it all Eric Wan - brought in reinforcements
and we also heavily relied on up-and-coming arbiters from the community who made it possible: Michael Corrie Daniel Rokhvarger
and FA Uttam Dhungel
who covered the bases to allow the rest of us to run around.
Thanks in addition to the Annex Chess Club for lending some sets and clocks due to high number of participants.

It's great to see the broad team that's been built up, well done!!

Great team, great event. I just have to figure out better parking options and food options!
It's marked 1/2-1/2 in chess-results. Time pressure may have been a factor in not finding the win.
It was indeed a draw. Embarrassing how simple the win is after Kd3 Kxf2 Kd2. I had lots of time. I can only say a senior moment. I wanted to go for lunch:) I believe if white left his pawn on h2, it should have been a draw, but I am too depressed to check with engine.
Even worse was my last round game where after black plays g5, if I play f4 I am +6. Going on to lose that game was the icing on the cake. No wonder my rating is plummeting. Chess is hard, but I hope to make my comeback soon.
