  • The 1987-88 CFC President is active again!

I noticed the name of Gordon Howe as a registrant in the Canadian Championship Festival. He was CFC President in 1987-88, and then seemed to disappear completely from the chess scene.

I don't remember if he served a full term, but it was during that period that the Saint John Candidates matches took place, and there was the dispute between Spraggett and Ivanov as to which should be in the Candidates (or maybe both). That was sometime in 1987, but may have been before Howe was elected.

As I recall, the matter of who would be the Canadian representative at the 1988 Candidates had been decided by the summer of 1987, so the decision came while Peter Stockhausen was President. I was at the 1987 Quebec Open promoting the WCF, when I was able to speak to Igor to try and get him to attend the event (who may still have been bitter over the whole thing, at that time). He came for the entire event. As I recall Howe came to the WCF and pitched in to help for most of the 4 weeks.
