  • Lisa Lane two time US Women Chess Champion RIP

Some say this controversial Women's Chess Champion from the 1960s may have been the character that inspired the Netflix series The Queens Gambit. Last night, I was looking at her game from the 1964 candidates in the USSR with another US women's Chess champion, Gisela Gresser. In this position, Lisa played Q-f5. I think she missed a winning move here.

Yes, she sure was. In the game I posted, she played a beautifully executed attack against her nemesis, Gisella Gresser.
I knew for sure that in this game, she must have missed a win somewhere, and sure enough, Q*e8+! works because after Q takes simply pushing the pawn to d7, and the queen can't take the pawn because of back rank, mate!

Nice find Sid! Lisa Lane was an interesting character, she made her choices and led an interesting life and a long one! As regards the solution my first impulse was 1.Ra6 deflection and then after 1...Qb5 2.Rb6 Rxe6 3.Rxb5 I realized that because of the last rank the queen sacrifice was much faster which led me to your solution. A direct forcing win!
