The Candidates....

I went to Toronto yesterday and after a couple of games at Chess in the Park which was at Trinity Bellwood Park I made my way to the Dog and Bear Pub on Queens just west of Dovercourt. When I entered the table closest to the door had about twenty young adults in a boisterous mood discussing of all things, chess! Boisterous about chess! This is a new world. Amongst those twenty were several young couples and one of the guys said he was going to join the tournament at the back of the pub. The ladies started teasing him and didnt think he had the nerve to join in, while the guys were betting on how badly he would be beaten.
I continued to the back and the tables in one corner with the chess group were full so I went and sat in the other corner. Directly in front of me was a big screen and they were showing Vidit vs Pragga. I thought this will be interesting. Then the moves started coming and it was as if they were playing just for me. Pragga ventured the first risky opening of the tournament, the Schliemann's Deferred of the Ruy Lopez and I had a trip down memory lane. I wish Dan Surlan was there watching. He had taught me everything I knew about that opening and I had some memorable wins and some horrible losses. Anyways, I knew I was going to get a treat watching how the superstars handled this opening. I had my favorite beer in front of me, a challenge to speed chess and I spent long moments between going into a trance watching delightful attacking variations being played out by some of my favorite commentators, Peter Leko, Daniel Naroditsky, and Tania Sachdev. I even had a brief blindfold session to whet my appetite further. I was thoroughly enjoying myself and three hours sped by like the blink of an eye.
Finally I decided I needed to visit the Great Hall, a block away, where the candidates were being held. I went to the front entrance and was turned away by the officious young man at the door. At first he was very brusque (because I didnt have a ticket) but then he nicely told me that I could go around the corner to get a general admission ticket. As I approached the side street entrance I heard a voice calling me. It was Salim and he came in with me and made arrangements with me to see the venue. As I was waiting to get in I almost felt like this was a reunion. I kept meeting old time players who were happy to see me. Spent time catching up with Anson, David Filipovich, Alex and James T. Thanks to Salim I managed to see the entire venue and had a great time.Last edited by Hans Jung; Sunday, 7th April, 2024, 01:09 PM.

As for Vidit vs Pragga how did the game go? Well definitely the psychology of the opening choice worked as Vidit continually mistimed his counterplay, for example delayed the strong Nd5 until it was no longer effective and played moves like h4 that the computer did not like. Vidit was definitely not at his tactical best and gradually Pragga took over the game.

I wonder if Pragga and Vaishali (brother and sister) have sessions where they discuss opening psychology and prep. Certainly they are both playing the same pyschological approach in the openings. An example with Vaishali was her 14.Nxf7 in this last game which worked out wonderfully.

You weren't the only one shocked by the delayed Schlieman: attached is Nepo looking in disbelief at the DGT projector after Praggs 4...f5.

edit: and will not do so again, seeing the garbage version it produced by downsizing my uploaded pic by 10x.Attached FilesLast edited by John Upper; Sunday, 7th April, 2024, 04:03 PM.

https://en.chessbase.com/post/candid...eling-of-dj-vu Uh-oh, look at the numbers. In last six candidates whoever was leading after round 4 went on to win the candidates. Guess who is leading the candidates this time after round 4?
