Gukesh is playing Romania's home grown best Bogdan - Deac in the first round. All the other games seem to be quiet affairs.

Interesting game Gukesh - Bogdan-Deac. It seemed back and forth with interesting complications around time control (moves 36 - 37) but gradually Gukesh took full control after Black had sacked the exchange and in the transition from middlegame to endgame. The final position was virtual zugzwang.

Also interesting in round one was the Firoujza - Caruana game. Caruana as black had a massive black squared pawn chain and a horrible black squared bishop, however his knight was fantastic! Evntually Caruana sacked a pawn to open up that horrible bishop and then Firoujza sacrificed a bishop on e5 but that was going to far. After that it was an easy win for Caruana.

Rd 2 Firoujza - Abdusattarov was over fast. What was Black thinking? He allows the advanced outpost knight on d6 (remember only one square away from f5), sacrifices a bishop on h3 which allows the G-file to be opened to his own king and finishes off allowing handsome knight forks to all his key pieces.

Pragga - MVL It looked like Pragga might have had something but it was all smoke and mirrors. At the end Pragga was up a pawn but MVL had the two bishops and was rock solid in the endgame. Draw.

Caruana-So fascinating game! Caruana initiated first with Nxf7 which was too dangerous to accept but So started his own combination which looked like it won the exchange. However Caruana ended up having connected passed pawns as compensation. Wesley So is a great defender and showed it. Caruana had to liquidate his passed pawns and ended up in a rook and pawn endgame. Probably a draw.
