There are so many things to admire about Leonard Barden's life in chess. What impresses me more than anything is this: rising from his very humble roots in south London, where his father was a dustman, to attend Oxford University on a scholarship, attained by excellent performance in secondary school (itself likely financed by a scholarship), and then graduating! Oxford is one of the ten or so top elite universities on the planet, and the class system in Britain was then even more dominant than nowadays.

Barden shares Oxford chess roots with at least two very notable Canadian chess figures: GM D. A. Yanofsky (born 1925, at Oxford around the same time as Barden), and IM Raja Panjwani (circa 2014)!!
