  • Jim Spraggett R.I..

    Sad news today.

Jim, Kevin's older brother, passed away last week at the age of 75. Jim and I were great friends in the early days.

He went to McGill and I was at Sir George Williams (now Concordia) and we would meet up at the McGill Chess Club. We hung out together. When he graduated and started moving up the corporate ranks, he would hire me to give him a hand (I was struggling to make my living organizing chess stuff so this was very helpful to make ends meet!).

At some point he moved to Toronto and we sorta lost touch although we did do a motorcycle trip together to Myrtle Beach one summer.

When Chess'n Math celebrated it's 25th anniversary, he came to Montreal with his family to share in the celebrations...that was very special for me!

A very bright guy, he ended up opening his own consulting company and worked on computer projects for energy companies.

I thank Mark Spraggett (the youngest Spraggett) for letting me know.

I am saddened that such a good person should leave us so early...and it makes me realize once again, that we are not here forever.

    R.I.P. my friend.

The whole Spraggett family showed up for the prize giving ceremony at the 1993 Canadian Open in London to celebrate Kevin's win and Grant's second place finish, so I got to meet them all. What a multi talented and interesting family, full of characters! - and now on this occasion my condolences to them. Happy times and sad times, all a part of life. Rest in peace Jim.
