  • Max Lange the 1st and the 2nd

Chess history is full of fascinating details and nothing better than being reminded of a favorite game. This game brought back memories as it was one of my favorites when I was studying the great attacking games of the nineteenth century back in the 70's.
https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1019074 Turns out it wasnt an actual game but analysis from a game and inspired me to some great attacking finishes. And then I added the Max Lange attack to my opening repertoire, both in tournament games and in blindfold play.
    I checked out Max Lange's games and the first one was against Schmucker (an appropriate name for a victim) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5 3.Nxe5 dxe4 4.Bc4 Qg5 5.Nxf7 Qxg2 6.Qh5 Qxh1+ 7.Ke2 Qxc1 8.Nd6+ Kd7 9.Qf7+ Kd6 10.Nc3 Qxa1 11.Ne4+ Ke5 and here White announced mate in three. There are several mates but I like 12.f4+ Kxe4 13.d3+ Kd4 14.Qd5 mate.

The fascinating part of historical research reveals that there are two Max Langes, both unrelated. Max Lange 1 was born in 1832 and died in 1899 and is most famous for his opening the Max Lange Attack. Max Lange 2 started his tournament career around the time that Max Lange 1 passed away. Max Lange 2 was also a strong player with much success but in 1920 moved to Japan where he became immersed in the game of Go which he declared to be much superior to chess. He was killed in an earthquake in 1926 at age 43.

Many sources include Max Lange 2's games in with Max Lange 1's games and so Max Lange 1 gets credit for many more nice wins and a much longer tournament career than he actually had. Another fascinating snippet of chess history.

Do you have their middle names or initials? My database has a bunch of games from 1903 and later which I assume would be #2's games.

All the sources that I have mark the difference by all games before 1900 belong to Max Lange 1, all games after 1900 are those of Max Lange 2. I haven't been able to find any middle names or initials. If anybody else has knowledge to add about the two Langes, especially distinguishing middle names or initials, please share.
