  • 2024 World Rapid and Blitz New York

https://en.chessbase.com/post/world-...024-full-lists I notice Shiyam, our national champion is playing, amidst about 150 GM's. Stephen Boyd is one of the arbiters. Hope you cause lots of upsets Shiyam!

https://en.chessbase.com/post/world-rapid-blitz-2024-d1 Lots of surprises as expected. Sargsyan, Noroditsky, Dominguez, good players but not likely leaders, however tied for first after day 1 with 4.5 out of 5. Magnus tough start. and Alice Lee 4 out of 4!

Yup, a tough start for Carlsen, it seems to me he is not "seeing" the board well. He is in the middle of the pack, with 1 win, 1 loss, and 3 draws. Today, Carlsen has white against a 2181 player, so a chance for him to win and get his mojo back.

Its nice to see (and hear) Aman Hambleton commentating. I like his witty responses.

Clearly intentional from Carlsen. The dress code is clear. Is Carlsen going to be another Fischer, thinking he is bigger than chess? I thought he was more sensible than that.

Thats big news, Magnus with drawing. I hope there isnt too much cheering. A million dollars for all the rest to aim for.

I was just enjoying Alice Lee games. Its like a bonus Christmas present. Chess the old fashioned way. Keep the two bishops. Take advantage of outpost squares. Practice basic strategy. Good pawn play. Good endgames. You know, the stuff that isnt played anymore, not modern enough. Grin. Go ahead, take a look.

Is that fair to say ?

He had a fine, he agreed to adhere to the code the next day.

To expect that a player should go back to the hotel and change, in between the rounds which were happening once every 80 minutes, is pushing it a little too far. The fine had been issued, and the player should have been given a chance to act in good faith the next day ; if this continued the next day, refusing to pair or kicking out would have been appropriate.

It really does sound as if FIDE was carrying some baggage from some other tussle (over Freestyle chess ? ) , and decided to get vindictive .

P.S : FWIW, I do think giving Magnus a fixed board #1 was too much . It does seem to have been done for Magnus alone (rather than for the reigning champion) : Anastasia Bodnaruk didn't get that in the Women's section.

It's interesting how Magnus controversies seem to happen right around the times he's underperforming in events. Does anybody seriously think he wouldn't have grudgingly complied with the rules had he been leading?

I've been enjoying the coverage by Aman Hambleton and James Canty, chess24 on youtube. Easier to listen to than the fide channel, shows multiple game diagrams at once, and more coverage of the women's games. They have limited cameras and nobody is covering the lower boards where the Canadians are. Can scroll through Take Take Take to listen to interviews by Gotham Chess. I haven't checked out coverage by Agadmator. And fun tourist videos by Sagar on chessbase India.
