  • Sharing the New Year Greeting from GM Evgeny Bareev

In the air at Nathan Phillips Square, you can almost hear the New Year’s bells ringing across the globe from east to west, heralding the arrival of 2025. Amid the dazzling lights, the atmosphere is filled with the essence of family, friendship, and love. As the year draws to a close, it feels incredible how quickly time has flown by!

This year, we are profoundly grateful for the guidance and support of many esteemed mentors and contributors in the chess community, including Francis, Mario, Mikhail, Bob, George, IA Aris, IA Hal, FM Victor, IM Mark, GM Bator, GM Evgeny, GM Razvan, GM Shawn, Omar and the team of Scarborough Chess Club, Victor and the team of Hart House Chess Club, as well as numerous dedicated chess parents and enthusiasts. Building on the foundation of a youth chess club, we established the nonprofit Markham Chess Club in 2024, aspiring to introduce more residents of the GTA to the enriching world of chess—a small vessel powered by the dual oars of intellect and perseverance. Through chess, we hope people will not only learn to play but also fall in love with this timeless game.

Undoubtedly, AI will have a profound impact on humanity's future, surpassing the influence of computers and the internet as we know them today. Faced with these ever-evolving, tireless learning machines, will humans become their masters, pets or slaves? I cannot say for sure, nor can I predict the outcome. However, enhancing our cognitive abilities, improving judgment, and managing stress and anxiety under pressure are among the few preparations we can make for the future—especially for our children.

Learning and competing in chess is one of the best ways to equip ourselves for what lies ahead!
