    Bob and Gord are trying a blitz tourney as our first tourney for the new year. Hope to see you there. See details below.

    GROUNDHOG DAY GAMBIT
    BLITZ CHESS TOURNAMENT

    WHEN: Sunday Feb 02 2025

    WHERE: Wellington Square United Church, 2121 Caroline Street, Burlington, ON

    START TIME: 1:30pm sharp! 7 double rounds

    PRIZES: TROPHIES AND CASH (BASED ON ENTRY NUMBERS)

    ENTRY FEE RECEIVED BY JAN 31 IS $40. AFTER JAN 31, THE ENTRY FEE IS $60.

    Registration on Feb 02 may result in a first-round bye.
    Check in between 1 – 1:15pm
    Last round zero-point bye only
    This is a Chess Federation of Canada (CFC) rated event
    CFC annual memberships / single quick (active) tournament membership fee
    can be purchased online at www.chess.ca
    Cash prizes based on entries, paid by e-transfer
    Tournament capacity: 60 players

    TIME CONTROL: 3 minutes + 2 second increment after each move

    ORGANIZER: Gordon Gooding
    ARBITERS: Bob Gillanders, Gordon Gooding

    REGISTRATION: Email the following to Gordon Gooding at miltonchess@hotmail.com :
    1. E-transfer entry fee, see above for details
    2. Competitor’s name (as found on Chess Federation of Canada website)
    3. CFC membership number (in good standing on Feb 02 2025)

    Hi all, we have decided to FIDE rate this blitz tourney. Hope that helps to make your decision easier to join this tourney.

      Hi all, now that I finished playing in Brantford (great job Lee and Rob!), time to get back to the Groundhog Gambit blitz tourney. I will use this post for registered players. Maybe I will put pics of the trophies. Remember this is FIDE rated. I will update periodically

          Added some more to the registration list. Only $40 entry fee until next Friday. This a 3min+2sec increment blitz tourney. Not for the faint of heart. If you dare!

            Another update to the registration list. I see the winner of the last Bob and Gord has signed up. Entry is only $40 if received by Friday, Jan 31. It goes up to $60 after that.

                Here is a picture of third place, a 16oz whiskey/scotch/(kool-aid?) glass engraved as shown. Entry fee is only $40 if received by Friday Jan 31. It goes up to $60 after that.

                    Another update to registration list coming up later tonight.

                    If you have purchased your cfc membership as a first time cfc member, can you send me a snapshot of that purchase showing your cfc id please along with your registration fee.

                    Some emails are coming in my junk mail and have not been noticed right away. My bad. Working on that.

                        Just another update. We are getting close to 30 players, :Another regular Bob and Gord victor has signed up. Hope to see more of you there. The site can hold 60 players (maybe a tiny bit more)

                          Hi all

                          Just another update on the registration list. Just a few hours till the entry fee changes from $40 to $60. We are in the 30's for number of players. Can we get to 40 before midnight tonight? If you are registering on Sunday at the site, remember, there may be a chance you might get a bye in round one.

                            just adding another registrant. You can sleep in for tomorrow since we dont start early in the morning but dont be late! You will need your energy and strong nerves for this tournament! Can you go the distance? NO PRESSURE.
