I just got home from a tournament and a pleasant surprise was awaiting me. A wild game between Gukesh and Giri in the first round. Giri should have won the middlegame but Gukesh most definitely won the endgame.

Another fight was Harikrishna against Erigaisi. The younster sacked with vigor but Harikrishna kept the material and gave him a good lesson.

In the other win Mendonca played a wonderful game until the end, then he hung a mating attack. Keymer took the point.

Gukesh, Harikrishna, and Keymer three way tie for first after one round. So far, so good for Gukesh.

In Rd 1 Challengers there were no end of fighting games. I was particularly impressed with the game Lu - Nogerbek. Black sacked two minors for a rook and change and the onus was on White to activate her extra pieces. The resulting strategy produced a wild game and an impressive finish.

The game between the two world headliners Oro and Vaishalli was all a showcase of the Inidan superstar. She got three rampaging pawns for a piece and overwhelmed Oro with sharp tactics.

Rd 1 most impressive finish was Gurel over Bulmaga. Actually a high class blunder. Bulmaga moved her queen to a loose square and following John Nunn"s adage: Loose pieces drop off, Gurel delivered. Nice tactics at the end which werent even played out.

In the challengers hope Oro can recover from his rough start - hard lessons.

The expected tussle between Vaishali and Lu ended up in a quiet draw.

Three wins amongst the veterans in the challengers rd 2. Bok, L'Ami, and Svane all scored big.
